Catch All of Alexander Skarsgard's Best Roles on Satellite TV

hbo series

While more than a few Americans might have a hard time finding Sweden on a map, the same cannot be said for recognizing the face of one of its most talented exports. The son of another acclaimed actor who managed to make it big States-side after conquering his native land, Alexander Skarsgard is the sort of actor who women want to be with, and men simply want to be. Talented, well-spoken, and classically handsome, he has managed to make his way up in the world of States-side entertainment. While most people know him as Eric Northman, vampire sheriff, from "True Blood," Alexander Skarsgard has actually appeared in another acclaimed HBO program, the mini-series "Generation Kill." However, those who spend time watching "Zoolander" over and over again on satellite TV will remember him as one of Ben Stiller's roommates who dies in the freak gasoline fight accident.

But Alexander Skarsgard has definitely come a long way from shouting the title of Starbucks drinks and dancing to Wham! in a Jeep. His performance in "Generation Kill," which was one of the most watched mini-series in HBO history, managed to bring him onto the radar screens of those who might not have been as well acquainted with his art-house and Swedish fare. And as a former Swedish military man himself, Alexander Skarsgard was an excellent pick for the role of a Seargent who is a whole lot more intelligent than his military organization might have bargained for. Viewers from New York to Texas have something that they can relate to in this performance, most definitely.

To go from playing a stoic and serious yet genuinely good guy to a slightly over-the-top campy vampire might be difficult for some, but this is one actor who does well with switching genres. After all, satellite TV viewers might not be familiar with his roles in serious Swedish TV series or dramatic films, but they might remember seeing him decked out in military gear on HBO. Now that he's traded the fatigues for fangs, Skarsgard has skyrocketed in popularity. While "True Blood" itself is drawing rave reviews and high numbers in its third season, a whole lot of people are just focused on the talent and looks of Alexander Skarsgard. And his chance to play a potentially wicked sheriff who manages to charm ladies time and time again is definitely the sort of role that will likely land him in the public eye more and more frequently.

If you've been looking for a fabulous new actor with a promising career worth following who likely hasn't been used to his full potential in American roles yet, then it definitely makes sense to follow Alexander Skarsgard. You're not likely to catch any of his early Swedish roles on satellite TV anytime soon, but chances are that you're going to be seeing him in more and more places. As long as he continues to pick excellent characters who allow him to be as wickedly funny as he is handsome and talented, he is definitely on the road to a serious level of success. And it's the sort of fame that appears to be well-deserved; after all, he deserves to be recognized for something other than appearing in an early Lady Gaga video.

Why HBO Might Be the Best Network on Television

Thursday, January 20, 2011

hbo series

Probably the most popular network on television these days is HBO. HBO offers great television shows, interesting documentaries, and the best movies. More and more cable and satellite television providers are offering packages and specials deals to their customers involving HBO. There are a couple of reasons for this. One is because cable and satellite television providers know that their customers want more access to the programming of HBO, so of course they are going to find ways to make it easier for their customers to get what they want. The second reason is that they know that if their customers try out HBO for 3 or 6 months at a time, they aren't going to want to give it up when the trial period is over. It's just that good!

So what is it that makes HBO so popular? Well there are a few reasons for this. First there are the terrific television shows. Currently, HBO has some great shows, such as True Blood, Flight of the Conchords, and In Treatment. If you take a look at HBO's website, you will be shocked to see how many of their shows you have heard people raving about. HBO has also been home to past hit series, such as Sex in the City and the Sopranos. It almost seems that any series that HBO touches, it turns to gold. There is also great availability with HBO. Unlike some other networks, HBO offers all of their programs under their On Demand channel option. So if you don't have a DVR and you didn't catch your favorite show when the new episode aired, it's no problem. You can either catch it when HBO re-airs the show throughout the week, or watch it On Demand. People also enjoy the fact that there are no commercials in HBO television shows. You get a full 30 minutes or an hour of your favorite show, instead of the 20 minutes or 45 minutes that you would get with most regular networks.

The next reason HBO is so popular is the movies. This is what originally made HBO what it is today. HBO gives the perfect blend of older, popular movies with brand new box office hits. HBO ensures that they will have movies that their customers care about seeing. There is nothing worse than signing up for a movie channel, paying the extra money per month, and then finding that you haven't heard of a single movie they have on their list. Old and new, HBO brings you the movies that you want to see. The other great option that has increased in popularity is HBO's high definition options. More people are buying televisions with HD capabilities. As more people want this feature, the television networks are responding accordingly.

HBO offers so much more than just great series and movies. They also offer incredible comedy shows and documentaries. They have truly covered all of their bases when it comes to entertainment.

Watch Your Favorite Oldies and Country Westerns With Satellite TV

Tuesday, January 18, 2011

hbo series

When television was young programming had its own genre. Many of the live-action sitcom shows that dominated the airways were geared towards families or adults. Since those early days of television, programming has evolved to fit an array of genres aimed at a wide variety of audiences according to age, class, and other demographics. It is easy to become overwhelmed with all of the choices available these days on tv. For those, however, who miss the simplicity of the old days of television there is a solution. Satellite tv offers a variety of shows and networks with the goal of bringing back old time tv series.

The first of these networks that developed a throwback block of shows from the 60s and 70s was Nick at Nite. This was originally a block of programming in the evening geared at older Americans. Nick at Nite featured shows like I Love Lucy, Happy Days, I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, Diff'rent Strokes, Mork and Mindy, The Munsters, and The Addams Family. Each of these shows served to bring adults back to the shows they grew up with on tv, and it gave them something to enjoy that reminded them of an earlier and easier time in life.

From Nick at Nite, TV Land was born. This was a niche network totally dedicated to this kind of television programming. TV Land took the 1950s image and applied it to their logo as well as their commercial programming. Tuning in is like taking a time machine back to the good old 50s and 60s. Recently, TV Land has expanded its programming to include more recent shows and sitcoms like Roseanne, Everybody Loves Raymond, Home Improvement, and Three's Company. It also features old Country Western films with the likes of John Wayne. So whether you love Westerns, or you loved tv programming anywhere from the 60s to the late 90s there's something for everyone on TV Land.

Going along with the themes of oldies and Westerns, on satellite tv you can also find new Westerns with a modern spin now in HD. There are two newer shows that fit the bill. One is Deadwood, an HBO Original Series that depicts the development of the town Deadwood, in South Dakota from a western settlement. The show twines together fiction and non-fiction history from the Western days. It features real life characters painted with some poetic license to make the show more compelling. Among those famed Westerners depicted in the show are Calamity Jane and Wild Bill. The show ran for 3 seasons on HBO and you can catch them all now on satellite tv.

The other Western show diverges more from the traditional path by mixing it with science-fiction. This futuristic Western was created by Joss Whedon who also created Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The show takes place in the year 2517 and follows the characters as they encounter and wrangle a whole new frontier- a new star system. While the show has a completely different setting, the feel of a real country Western is still there. These are the cowboys of the future trying to settle an unruly and wild new land. You can also catch this original series on satellite tv and get the full effect with HD.

The Best 10 TV Shows of All Time - Number 2 - Six Feet Under

hbo series

I am a classic television junky. Most shows made today do not hold up to the originality, the story lines and the uniqueness of the old programs made during televisions "Golden Era". As a result, when and if I become a follower of a series, it has to be special; If the show doesn't touch me emotionally, I'll reach for the remote and search for T.V. Land. Not to say that there have not been ground breaking television shows made in the last 20 years. Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Picket Fences, Northern Exposure, The West Wing and The Sopranos are a few that come to mind. Heck, I even enjoyed Beverly Hills 90210! Still, most of the programming and its content left me yearning for Columbo or Hill Street Blues and the television of the '70's and '80's.

My brother, a great judge of what is strong or weak on television, recommended I check out Six Feet Under and to tell him what I think (this was 2003, two years into the shows run). We don't get HBO on television (to date) in Canada, so the usual way to watch an American show not accessible to the masses is to rent the DVD at the video store. After renting and watching Season 1, The Pilot, I instantly realized that this show was unique and special. When I watch a show, I watch a show, study it, digest it, judge it. I instantly LOVED the show. I felt that click, the alarm that goes off..the "quality gauge" in your head. I needed more! The characters, above all, intrigued and fascinated me. I related to the portrayals given by all the unique and flawed actors. The daily struggles that they endured (self doubt, hurt, fears, emotions, death, etc.) allowed me, the viewer to relate in a way that made me think that all of us have the same fears in day to day life; the content made me feel that I'm not alone in coping with this adventure (and sometimes struggle) called life. When a program can open your eyes and make you ponder your own existence, the "what's it all about" life questions, you treat it with as much appreciation and respect as a classic novel that gave you the words you lived by or a song that was the soundtrack of your life. A series that sent a charge through me so strong and powerful, I felt fortunate to "get it".

Six Feet Under is not a series (graphic language and content) for the networks. Without the graphic and sexual content, this program would never have such a following. This is a show for adults and I understand the difference between family entertainment and adult content. Credit HBO for its existence. Credit HBO for taking a chance on a show that in its first few years was not a huge success. Like M*A*S*H, credit the network for allowing the series to grow and build an audience. Because of this, Six Feet Under turned nay sayers into fans. DVD sales and rentals alone prove that the public is intrigued by this show, its content, its writing and its characters.

Though there are dozens of dramas and comedies that have touched the mass public and myself, Six Feet Under deserves #2 all time television status due to:
-Being the one show that treated and allowed us to see life and death in a realistic and graphic way. It was not always easy to watch but give credit to the show for its honesty and realism that both entertained us and alarmed us simultaneously.
-The characters that we identified with, whether individually or as a combination. Each actor cast in their respected roles, allowed us to relate to each one with a flurry of emotions and identification. Nate Fisher, the anchor and flawed "savior" of the family, inherited the role of patriarch after the death Nathaniel Sr. What's symbolic about Nate is that he realizes and accepts his role in keeping the family together but negative forces and self destructive behaviour (based on impulsive behaviour) usually complicates Nate's life to the point where Nate questions his own existence and his place in life (we can all relate) He is the conscientiousness of the the show. David Fisher, middle child, closet homosexual, sensitive and angry, struggles for acceptance and understanding in a world dictated by social norms. David's continual search for answers with his conflicting lifestyles (homosexual in one world and seemingly straight with his family, funeral home clients and church in another), give way to guilt, shame and confusion, combined with a sensitivity and compassion for others make David the Id, Ego and Super Ego of the show. Claire Fisher, the youngest Fisher by several years, provides the show with youth, optimism, pretentiousness, an above it all attitude. With an honesty the other Fisher's are not capable of, Claire is the voice of truth on the show. Ruth Fisher, mother of the Fishers, provides the family with the security of a mother we all received or craved, as well as the fears that a mother can bring onto you with all her overbearing ways. Ruth holds all the guilt, the fear and the insecurity of the show. Ironically, Ruth being the most straight-laced and unflinching of all characters paradoxically is the one family member most open to change. Ruth represents adaptation and how we are all capable of overcoming tragedy and grief...and moving on with our lives.
-The Finale, in all its hype, is THE BEST FINALE...ever. I won't describe it. My description could never give this masterpiece the credit due. Just rent it...it's the most powerful piece of film I have ever seen...period.

Six Feet Under, the best drama series of our generation...a show that could have continued on for a couple more years but new when to call it quits...on top. Six Feet Under never died though...for those who watched, it will live on forever in our memories.

Dead and Gone - Sookie Stackhouse, Book 9 - By Charlaine Harris Book Review

Monday, January 10, 2011

hbo series

Dead and Gone by New York Times best-selling author Charlain Harris is the 9th book in the Southern Vampire Mysteries series. The previous eight books revolve around Sookie Stackhouse's life as a barmaid in a fictional town in Louisiana, while living a secret life as a telepath.

All of the eight books were told in first-person by Sookie Stackhouse herself, and has been adapted to an HBO series, True Blood, with Anna Paquin portraying Sookie Stackhouse.

The ninth book, Dead and Gone is going to be released early this May, but the first chapter is already posted on Charlaine Harris' website as a teaser for the fans. A lot of people have been waiting on the edge of their seats as early as December of last year for the release of the book, and the sales are expected to sweep the record of sales of the sales of the eight previous books combined.

The first chapter of Dead and Gone is about Sookie Stackhouse still, with hints about other special characters appearing in the book like werewolves, vampires, and the villains in the story the Fellowship of the Sun. Somehow, Sookie Stackhouse always finds herself stuck in the middle of events, but eventually be the one to entangle everything.

I just hope that Dead and Gone will feature a different twist in the plot, so that readers will not be bored with the same structure, and be excited with Sookie's character again.

For more information about the upcoming book Dead and Gone by Charlaine Harris, just follow the link.
