Deadwood

hbo series
Deadwood Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video) Deadwood is a classic western with modern appeal. There is great acting, the story line is interesting, and they throw in historic characters as well such as Wild Bill and Calamity Jane. Timothy Olyphant is delicious as the main character. I found the show funny, shocking, and enthralling. Overall, as a western genre fan, I rate this show at 4 stars. I would have given it 5 stars, but I found some of the violent scenes a bit excessive and stomach turning.Overall, a top notch western series.

Superheroes: The flip sideWILL COLORADO MASSACRE LEAVE UGLY SCARS ON BATMAN MYTHOLOGY?

    Thursday, August 9, 2012

Flip the coin, and superheroes can easily become super-villains. The hero can become the scapegoat, and the temptation of putting the blame on the obvious rather than the inexplicable is a popular modern symptom.

Take Batman. Take the July 20 shooting in Colorado during the showing of The Dark Knight Rises, and Bruce Wayne _ hand in hand with the Joker _ are running the risk of becoming losers.

After the tragic massacre that left 12 people dead, some historians and critics have observed that the event might forever tarnish the legend of Batman (see side story). It is hardly a surprise that some insist the story of Batman has had a significant influence on James Holmes _ the alleged murderer now on trial _ who had his hair dyed flaming orange.

It doesn't help that when captured, it's believed that Holmes told the police that he was the Joker.

But everywhere, Bat-fans are clamouring to dispute that association. Somchay Nitimongcolchai is Thailand's biggest Batman fan for the past 10 years _ actually, he claims to be one of the most loyal Bat-fans in all of Asia.

Two months ago Somchay, 39, opened Batcat Museum & Toys in Bang Kapi, a homemade gallery featuring 5,000 items of superhero memorabilia, with Batman a prominent character.

Asked how he felt when he first heard of the tragedy in Colorado, Somchay's answer was "shocked", echoing what's been said around world. But when asked how Batman's reputation and image could be damaged because of the event, he says confidently that the two things have nothing to do with each other.

"It's a two-sided issue. If you want it to relate, then it will. But you can also see things the other way and it's up to what people want to think," says Somchai.

"That guy [Holmes] is obviously a madman. Normal people know it's wrong to carry a gun and shoot up dozens of [innocent] people. Batman shouldn't be blamed for this. It's all a matter of coincidence. Holmes might have lost his mind or it just snapped, and it happened to coincide with the release of the new Batman movie.

"What if a different movie was coming out and the criminal had chosen a villain from that film? It would probably get the blame as well.

"Movies and popular culture shouldn't be taking the blame for crimes committed by mentally ill people."

The reason Somchay personally believes that Batman has become such a big deal in the debate is because the Joker has assumed legendary status in pop culture after Heath Ledger's astounding performance in the previous installment, The Dark Knight.

"This character is so exposed because Ledger did a spectacular job playing him," says Somchay. "And it was also his last role before he died, which is material for a myth. If the criminal had cited the name of a less famous and celebrated villain, maybe the media wouldn't have blown it up this much."

Comic book characters are in a universe of their own. They certainly have the ability to inspire devotion and following that crosses over into the real world. Somchay's Batcat Toys & Museum is an example of how comic book characters have such a global reach. From his own estimate, the collector has spent several million baht to purchase all the toys and vintage paraphernalia from other collectors and websites.

Even though his museum will greatly appeal to young people, Somchay feels that the real gist of Batman is something for adults. He believes that children are less likely to appreciate the deeper messages that explore the psyche of the characters, and probably go for more action-packed thrills like The Avengers.

''Little kids should watch the Batman cartoons. There's an appropriate media for everyone and parents should filter what their children are taking in,'' he says. ''If you want to let them watch it, fine, but educate them too about what's right or wrong.'' Somchay has little doubt about the future of Batman.

''I can guarantee you a new Batman movie will come out in the future. A newer version that will reflect popular culture and issues of the time.

''There is no way this event could completely affect it. Sure, people have not gone to see the movie for a week or so out of respect. But that won't last forever. The movie overshadowed the event.''

As of now, The Dark Knight Rises has grossed around $750 million worldwide. The highest-grossing film of the year so far is The Avengers, at $1.4 billion.

''I don't even think Batman is as violent as the lakorn we see on Thai TV,'' says Somchay. ''I find that much more aggressive, and people watch it passively every day and I'm sure that has more of effect. If you think Batman is dangerous, what about Dr Hannibal? That movie is much, much more violent. It's gory, bloodied, and chilling to watch.

''If you think popular culture can have a bad effect on people, the world might as well stop making any movies about murder, rape and anything gruesome. Those offer so much more specific examples for people to follow.''

Deadwood: The Complete Series (DVD) I watched the entire series at the rate of about 3 or 4 episodes a day as soon as I bought it. What I'm saying is, I like Deadwood.Complaints that S2 and S3 didn't live up the first season are valid, but the slower pacing and intense/lengthy bouts of dialogue in later episodes didn't detract from my enjoyment at all.the complaints about profanity amuse me, because that's one of my favorite parts of the show. I must be a vulgar person

In many ways, HBO's Deadwood embraces the Western's unambiguous morality during the cinema's silent era through the 1930s while also blazing trails through a post-NYPD Blue, post-The West Wing television age exalting dense and customized dialogue. On top of that, Deadwood has managed an original look and texture for a familiar genre: gritty, chaotic, and surging with both dark and hopeful energy. Yet the show's creator, erstwhile NYPD Blue head writer David Milch, never ridicules or condescends to his more grasping, futile characters or overstates the virtues of his heroic ones. Set in an ungoverned stretch of South Dakota soon after the 1876 Custer massacre, Deadwood concerns a lawless, evolving town attracting fortune-seekers, drifters, tyrants, and burned-out adventurers searching for a card game and a place to die. Others, particularly women trapped in prostitution, sundry do-gooders, and hangers-on have nowhere else to go. Into this pool of aspiration and nightmare arrive former Montana lawman Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) and his friend Sol Starr (John Hawkes), determined to open a lucrative hardware business. Over time, their paths cross with a weary but still formidable Wild Bill Hickok (Keith Carradine) and his doting companion, the coarse angel Calamity Jane (Robin Weigert); an aristocratic, drug-addicted widow (Molly Parker) trying to salvage a gold mining claim; and a despondent hooker (Paula Malcomson) who cares, briefly, for an orphaned girl. Casting a giant shadow over all is a blood-soaked king, Gem Saloon owner Al Swearengen (Ian McShane), possibly the best, most complex, and mesmerizing villain seen on TV in years. Each of these characters, and many others, will forge alliances and feuds, cope with disasters (such as smallpox), and move--almost invisibly but inexorably--toward some semblance of order and common cause. Making it all worthwhile is Milch's masterful dialogue--often profane, sometimes courtly and civilized, never perfunctory--and the brilliant acting of the aforementioned performers plus others. --Tom Keogh

The eight episodes of the first season set the style for the show: a massive cast of a vivid characters on both sides of the bars, four or five stories unleashed at a breakneck pace and framed by angry, oddball introductions, and a soaring casualty rate. Created by Homicide producer Tom Fontana, this drama quickly earned its rightful reputation as the most brutal show on TV. It's simple chemistry: combine volatile ingredients in a confined space, shut tight, and shake. The yellow brick road of the Oswald Correctional Facility (affectionately known as 'Oz' among the inmates) leads to 'Emerald City,' an antiseptic cellblock of cement and glass overseen by prison-reform advocate Tim McManus (Terry Kinney). The first episode introduces its two most compelling inmates: meek lawyer Beecher (Lee Terguson), who transforms from a vulnerable lamb to a fearless, drug-addicted wildcat, and Muslim activist Kareem Said (Eamonn Walker), a fiercely non-violent leader whose campaign for reform explodes in a season-climaxing riot. The stunning first-season cast also features Ernie Hudson (the warden), Rita Moreno (a worldly drug-counseling nun), and Edie Falco (who jumped from her role as a single-mother prison guard to mob wife in The Sopranos). It carries no rating, but the drug use, nudity, and brutal violence make this highly inappropriate for young viewers and unsuited to the squeamish. Oz pulls no punches in its portrayal of prison violence and predatory abuse. --Sean Axmaker

    Main Khunkhar Yodha

    Saturday, May 5, 2012

This story revolves around Sarkar strong principle of giving right justice to his village people. It proves justice to be stronger than relations. This is a story of Sarkar -- a powerful authority of village whose unbiased judgment is the final order for all the villagers. This story describes his family issues. Sarkar's judgments are so strong that he doesn't even leave his own cousin who rapes a poor village girl and debars him from the society. For Sarkar, one wrong decision is equal to his death. Sarkar is said to be the Lord of Justice. A day turns out when Sarkar's own brother is blamed for raping a girl. This is not true. But still looking at the proofs Sarkar is forced to take the decision of debarring his pure hearted brother. Later, he comes to know that his brother is innocent and he has taken a wrong decision. Realizing this fact, Sarkar breathes his last breath with guilt in his eyes. Watch the movie; it has a great emotional touch.

Photo gallery: Photo gallery with over 50 never-before-seen images.Editorial ReviewsAmazon.comFamily dysfunction. Treachery. Betrayal. Coarse profanity. Brutal violence. Graphic (and sometimes brutal) sex. No, it's not The Sopranos, it's Rome, HBO's madly ambitious series that bloodily splatters the glory of Rome just as savagely as Monty Python and the Holy Grail soiled the good name of Camelot (but with far fewer laughs; very few funny things happen on the way to this forum). Set in 52 B.C. (Before Cable), Rome charts the dramatic shifts in the balance of power between former friends Pompey Magnus (Kenneth Cranham), leader of the Senate, and Julius Caesar (Ciaran Hinds), whose imminent return after eight years to Rome after conquering the Gauls, has the ruling class up in arms. At the heart of Rome is the odd couple friendship between two soldiers who fortuitously become heroes of the people. Lucius Vorenus (Kevin McKidd) is married, honorable, and steadfast. Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson) is an amoral rogue whose philosophy is best summed up, 'I kill my enemies, take their gold, and enjoy their women.' Among Rome's most compelling subplots is Lucius's strained relationship with his wife, Niobe (Indira Varma), who is surprised to see her husband alive (but not as surprised as he is to find her upon his homecoming with a newborn baby in her arms!) Any viewer befuddlement over Rome's intrigues and machinations, and determining who is hero and who is foe, disappears the minute Golden Globe-nominee Polly Walker appears as Atia, Caesar's formidable niece and a villainess for the ages. In the first hour alone, she offers her already married daughter as a bride to the recently widowed Pompey. One eagerly awaits to see what (or who) she'll do next as much as we anticipate her comeuppance in the final episode. Rome is a painstakingly mounted production that earned eight well-deserved Emmy nominations in such categories as costumes, set design, and art direction. Michael Apted (Coal Miner's Daughter) was honored with a Director's Guild Award for the first episode, 'The Stolen Eagle.' But artistic considerations aside, instantly addicted viewers will agree with Atia, who notes at one point, 'I adore the secrecy, the intrigue. It's most thrilling.' --Donald Liebenson

Game of Thrones Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video) Winter is coming! I really love Game of Thrones! I did not watch it the first season or most of the second. I actually had to buy the series and watch them all a week before the new April episode came on - I love the baby Dragon's....they are adorable. (how long do dragon's stay adorable?) Love the Stark family - hate the little punk King Geoffrey....love the dwarf Uncle and do not know all the right names. What kind of an imagination the author of Game of Thrones has. I just shake my head with wonder at the kind of imagination it takes to create something like Game of Thrones - it is on the same level as Harry Potter. Kudo's for turning the book's into such a great series! Love IT!!!

Love IT!!!

Boardwalk Empire: The Complete First Season (DVD) Boardwalk Empire has everything you'd expect in an HBO drama--sharply drawn characters, large-scale stories intercut with intimate moments and a sense that you couldn't find something like it anywhere else on the guide. It's maybe the best new show HBO has launched in several years.

Gets the job done, good value Empire Falls

    Sunday, April 22, 2012

    hbo series

Empire Falls (DVD) I really like this movie/ miniseries. Ed Harris is amazing, as usual (see Pollack). I give it a 5 relative to movies of it's type. Citizen Kane it isn't. But, for a laid back story about real people in a real setting, it couldn't have been done better. Re:Another review that called it slow-paced and boring, what do you expect? I assume you need a car chase and gunshots every 15 seconds to be satisfied. Stick to action junk. I like reality.

On a daily basis, goodhearted restaurant manager Miles Roby (Ed Harris 'Glengarry Glen Ross') tries to keep his Empire Grill going, even as the wealthy and powerful Mrs. Whiting(Joanne Woodward 'Philadelphia')Editorial ReviewsAmazon.comA frame-bursting roster of actors crowds this two-part HBO miniseries, which is nothing less than a look at America through the lens of a small New England town. Richard Russo adapted his own novel, a story of a gently depressed factory town that has always been run by the wealthiest family around (currently lorded over by matriarch Joanne Woodward). Ed Harris plays the central role, a decent, cautious man who runs a local diner and carefully negotiates the political niceties of Empire Falls; Paul Newman is his rapscallion of a father (the son is perpetually picking food out of Dad's beard), Helen Hunt is Harris's ex-wife, Aidan Quinn his feistier brother, and Robin Wright Penn his tragical mother seen in flashbacks. The goal of Russo and director Fred Schepisi seems to have been fidelity to the novel, which gives the film a pleasingly relaxed pace but also a somewhat literal-minded binding. Even that doesn't explain the general lack of tautness, or why so much of the dialogue has an awkward fit in actors' mouths. Harris and Newman, of course, are younger and older versions of American monuments, and their sheer presence goes a long way toward making the picture work (for the premium Newman-Russo match, see Robert Benton's sublime film of Nobody's Fool). Most of the twists in the final reels are genuinely affecting, and the movie has the courage to end on a mild note rather than strain to tie everything up. It's a fitting finale for an unassuming enterprise. --Robert Horton

    Hightly recommend John Adams

    John Adams

    hbo series
John Adams (DVD) John Adams tends to be the Founding Father we know the least about. This miniseries, based on the McCullough biography of the same name, rounds out the man who is probably more directly responsible for the way our government runs more than any other of them. Paul Giamati is amazing in his portrayal of probably the most honest politian we ever had in the presidency. But even more interesting are the portrayals of Wasington, Jefferson, Hamilton, Franklin, Sam Adams, and most especially, his wife Abigail. I learned so much about what they were like by watching these amazing portrayals of such famous people. It takes them off the pedestal we tend to put them on and shows them for the flawed, but great human beings they were, bringing revolutionary ideals that had never been tried anywhere before. Try this series, you won't be disappointed.

Good value! Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season

    Friday, April 6, 2012

Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season

    hbo series
Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) After the free weekend of HBO I just got that played every episode of GAME OF THRONES back to back, I was excited to watch it, being a fan of genre television. I was also a fan of a lot of the people involved, from Sean Bean to Mark Addy to Lena Headey to Peter Dinklage. So, watch it I did, and it was just about everything I hoped it would be: smart, engaging, involving, bawdy, lusty and just the right amount of the fantastical that doesn't take away from the rather gritty realism the show has. In short, the show is addictive, and it almost made me want to subscribe to HBO just to be able to watch it.But after taking the last few days to think about it, I've found some things that I just don't think work as well as they should and maybe it's more revealed in Martin's books but I just have to sound off.I have a great amount of respect for this show. It's done very well. I found myself liking characters I didn't think I'd care about, such as Dani Targaryen and Khal Drogo. I found myself hating characters I thought I'd like, like Littlefinger Baelish (which makes me think, was anyone on THE WIRE American? Not that I care, but I just find it funny with Aidan Gillen, Dominic West and Idris Elba...). But the characters that are a little too one-dimensional are ultimately MOST of The Starks and MOST of the Lannisters. We get to see Catelyn be the loving, doting mother and wife, but once things go all pear-shaped, we get to see her more brutal and vicious side. Ned, Robb, Jon... all the Stark men, really, are men of honor, courage, and virtue. And conversely, other than Tyrion (who is just AWESOME), the Lannisters are unrelenting scumbags with no redeeming qualities whatsoever, with the exception of a few scenes of Cersei's, where we see some of the stone that her heart has become begin to bleed.Don't get me wrong; I'm all for clear heroes and clear villains in a film. But in a film, you only get a few hours at most to develop characters and sometimes, there's too much story to get in the way of adding layers to the characters. Television is a lot different though. You can get more into the thick of the characters. In many ways, television is more about character than it is about action and story, and this was the only way I felt the show fall short. Now, this is just the first season, and with the Lannisters and Starks largely intact, I'm relatively certain we'll see these characters with more dimension and depth. Until then, I want a Direwolf pup really bad.A Lannister always pays his debts, but Winter is coming. Season Two could get really awesome.
