WWII As Told by Heller's Catch-22 and Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five

Sunday, May 29, 2011

hbo series

Everyone is talking about the new HBO miniseries The Pacific. While it is well scripted, brilliantly performed, and visually realistic, what really has critics' attention is its jumbled storyline. Herein, they say, lies the series' real strength. So why is it that when we have no overarching narrative, we get bad marks in creative writing, but when Tom Hanks does it, he gets his own miniseries?

Historically, war stories have been told from a zoomed-out perspective that focuses on major events and overall movements. This is a tidy, logical, and totally misleading way of representing war. Just ask any veteran. With time, however, war stories have become increasingly fragmented, switching from the historian's perspective to the combatant's. With this trend comes a heightened awareness of - and ambiguity toward - the morality of individual actions during war.

With technological developments immensely increasing our capacity for destruction, the last century has forever changed the way the world looks at combat. WWI started with the assassination of one man and spiraled out of control into a thirty/plus-nation massacre. WWII had an unprecedented fifty million civilian casualties - many of whom were not simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's no wonder that the way war stories are told increasingly reflects a frustrated, absurdist point of view.

Joseph Heller's 1961 novel, Catch-22, is one of the finest examples of war satire. It follows - if you can justify using that word - a Captain Yossarian, who is hell-bent on getting out of fighting in WWII because he thinks "every one of them" is trying to kill him. Every one of whom? Them. His dream is to get discharged on grounds of insanity, but obviously he can't request to leave outright. After all, only sane people would want to stop fighting, which means the only people qualified to leave are the ones who want to be there in the first place. Now you see why the novel coined the term "catch-22".

Heller's novel is filled with enough circular reasoning to give Lewis Carroll a run for his money. If the idiocy of the plot itself isn't enough to drive the point home, the plot structure certainly will: its forty-two chapters shuffle through time unannounced and incessantly, leaving us readers just as disoriented as the soldiers themselves. Mercifully, Catch-22 is hilarious, which seems to suggest that sometimes, there's really nothing you can do but laugh.

Another WWII novel in this vein is Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five, which he published in 1969 based on his experience as a prisoner of war during the Allied bombing of Dresden. Its protagonist, Billy Pilgrim, is an optometrist who is woefully unprepared for the war. At one point, he is saved from extremely friendly fire by the fortuitous arrival of German soldiers, who take him and his would-be assassin prisoner. Because they are locked safely away in a Dresden slaughterhouse, Billy and the other prisoners miraculously survive the demolition of the city.

If this all sounds unsatisfactorily straightforward to you, you'll be happy to hear that Billy is also involuntarily time-tripping between different moments in his life, taking you, the reader, along for the ride. Among these moments is his future life as an abductee on the planet Tralfamadore, where he lives in captivity with another abductee, also from Earth, who happens to be a female porn star. Living with the Tralfamadorians teaches Billy that because there's no such thing as linear time, there's also no free will, which keeps Billy from getting too worked up about the whole thing.

So, the next time you sit down to watch a dizzying installment of The Pacific, keep in mind that it's books like Catch-22 and Slaughterhouse-Five that inspired its unusual piecemeal structure. After all, who wants to stay focused on the big picture when there doesn't seem to be one.

Things You May Not Know About Papillons

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

hbo series

Because they have delightful personalities, over sized ears and a light, fluffy coat, a Papillon is one of the most distinctive of all dog breeds. The breed takes its name, "Papillon," from the French word meaning "butterfly." However, their appearance is not the only thing these dogs are known for. Besides having a distinctive look, a Papillon is also noted for many other qualities. Listed below, you will find just a few of the historical references, stories and facts that have enabled the Papillon breed to gain popularity.

With their dignified appearance, a Papillon was highly prized and sought after among European royalty. Nobility who loved Papillons include Henry II, Henry III, Henry XIV, Madame de Pompadour and most notably, Marie Antoinette.

Today, the Papillon breed is still a favorite of the wealthy and privileged and for those in the public eye. Famous people who are lovers of this breed are popular singer Christina Aguillera with her dogs Chewy and Stinky, and Star Trek actor George Takei.

The Papillon experienced a rise in popularity upon being brought to France, while the breed has been long featured in paintings in Spain, and church frescoes as far back as the 13th century.

As was previously mentioned the name of the breed comes from the French word for butterfly. The droopy eared variety of Papillons are known as Phalene, which translates to mean "night moth."

With a historical past open for debate, on the HBO series, "Elizabeth I," the Mary, Queen of Scots character is shown caring for a Papillon. Though there is no data to confirm this fact, it was likely a creative choice on the part of a stylist or director.

There have also been Papillons mentioned in songs over the years as well, such as "The Twilight Singers," and "Papillon Stalemate," by an alternative band.

American actors Steven McQueen and Dustin Hoffman starred together in a movie titled, "Papillon," however for people who love the breed, the movie might not be what they thought it was. The film is actually an adventure-type movie about Steve McQueen's character busting out of a jail built upon a desert island, not at all about dogs.

In the news, a pregnant Papillon that is known by the name of Mademoiselle Giselle has adopted an abandoned squirrel by the name of Finnegan. Mademoiselle Giselle took care of the injured squirrel and took him into her home, and once she gave birth, she tended to the squirrel in much the same way she did her puppies.

The Monogram by Odysseas Elytis I will always mournhear me?for you, alone, in Paradise. I Fate, like a switchman, will turn Elsewhere the lines of the palm Time will concede for one moment How else, since man loves and is loved The heavens will perform our insides And innocence will strike the world With the scythe of deaths blackness. II I mourn the sun and I mourn the time that comes Without us and I sing of others whove passed If this is true The bodies addressed and boats sweetly gliding by The guitars that flicker under the waters The believe me and the dont One in the air and one in the music The two small animals, our hands That tried to climb one another in secret The flowerpot cool through the open garden gate And the parts of sea coming together Beyond the dry-stone wall, beyond the hedge The windflower you held in your hand Whose purple shuddered three times for three days above the waterfall If this is all true, I sing The wooden beam and square tapestry On the wall, the Mermaid with tresses unbraided The cat that watched us in the dark A child with incense and the red cross The hour when night falls on unapproachable rocks I mourn the garment that I fingered and the world came to me. III Like so I speak of you and me Because I love you and in love I know How to enter in like the full moon From everywhere, about your small foot in the boundless sheets How to pluck the jasmineand I have the power To blow the wind and take you in sleep through the moons passages ...

In Treatment - Is Newly-Divorced Therapist Played by Gabriel Byrne Ready For a Dating Relationship?

Sunday, May 22, 2011

hbo series

The boundary-challenged therapist in the HBO series, In Treatment, is now a single man. Last season, the soulfully conflicted therapist played by Gabriel Byrne had tormented himself and his mid-life wife over his feelings for a younger patient who came onto him like a 20-something Lolita. Their unconsummated yet life-changing relationship was the catalyst for his divorce and his move to Brooklyn to start fresh. Is he ready for a dating relationship? Would you be willing to date him so soon after divorce?

Friends and therapists often advise us to wait to date someone until they have been divorced a year. Why?

The pain of a break up and rebirth opens the door for enormous personal growth, unless you are distracted by passionate pleasures or rebound relationships that seem to ease your angst. The therapist played by Gabriel Byrne is choosing the path of personal growth, at least in the opening episodes of this season. He is working with his own therapist to uncover the love lessons of his marital breakdown and the malpractice lawsuit filed against him by the family of another one of his patients who was a possible suicide victim.

Now imagine that you met this divorced, displaced, vulnerable and soulful therapist for a lunch date or a drink after work. You instantly may be attracted to his physical charm and feel excited to learn more about him. You might ask how he's doing on his own after two decades of marriage.

If he told you about his weekend trips by train to see his children, you would realize he may not have the freedom to date for a while. What if you asked the single most important question about his divorce: Does he accept responsibility for his role in the break up of his marriage and family life?

He might close up and be vague, to spare you his painful story. If he felt comfortable or interested in you, he might speak from his heart and share his insights and angst over his divorce.

You might be riveted by his soulful revelations and irresistibly attracted to his physical charms. But is he ready to date?

This is a good time to ask yourself if you want to go through the healing and rebuilding process that can continue for years after a long marriage ends.

How would this dating relationship support your well being?
Do you want to be needed by someone in a vulnerable state?
Do you need to receive versus give the emotional support in a relationship?
Are you seeking a more light-hearted, emotionally energizing dating relationship?

These are some of the issues that make dating after divorce so difficult.

If there is click of mutual interest and attraction, you may decide to grow through tough times together from the very start of your dating relationship. If your eyes are open to the personal challenges and growth that lie ahead, this could be the start of a lovely relationship.

True Blood on Satellite TV

Wednesday, May 11, 2011

hbo series

Vampires have often been a favorite subject for the cinematic arts. Their ghastly, yet suavely preternatural demeanor and lust for our red, liquid human blood makes them the perfect candidates for an elegantly gruesome HD feature length movie presentation. The recent success of movies like Twilight and Underworld, coupled with earlier big screen adaptations of Bram Stoker's Dracula and numerous other offshoots including Anne Rice's fabulous brooding brood of vamps, depicted so memorably by uber-super-stars Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, have ensured that vampires have and will continue to haunt the collective imagination. But vampires aren't made only for the silver screen. They've migrated to the ubiquitous TV tube.

Case in point, the HBO series True Blood, which you can catch weekly courtesy of a satellite TV subscription (if you don't have satellite TV yet, what are you waiting for?). True Blood is based on the Sookie Stackhouse series penned by Southern author Charlaine Harris. The books detail the life of Sookie, not a vampire, but a telepathic bar maid who false in love with a fang toothed undead. Sookie inhabits the fictional town of Le Bon Temps, Louisiana. The good times aren't what you'd expect them to be. The town is populated by all sorts of ghouls and goblins and witches and fairies and vampires of course. The novels are romantic in nature: supernatural love that blows across an otherwise normal small town. The books have led the way to a TV series, created by Alan Ball, the genius behind Six Feet Under (another satellite TV gem). It takes Harris' inventions, such as synthetic blood (a Japanese invention as it were) that allows vamps to hang out in the open just like real humans, and a bar called Fangstasia which draws a camp of humans who like to get it on with the undead.

True Blood, the first season, follows the plot of Dead Until Dark, the original book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. The series is sexy, scary and funny, a must see in HD. As a romance, there's plenty of vampire sex, especially between Sookie, played by Anna Paquin who has moved on from her childish Piano days in dramatic fashion, and Bill Compton played by Stephen Moyer. But the series isn't purely insipid, sappy, romance-there's a lot of verve and wit in there too.

Although Sookie can read minds, she cannot read the mind of her 173 year old lover. He was a civil war vet. Modern vampires, he tells the young telepath, are actually top trend setters and they often appear on network TV talk shows.

The show is cleverly put together. The backwoods Louisiana setting is colorful, even more so with its preternatural population. The good looking inhabitants and folksy town demand HD. Each episode ends in a cliff hanger and there are plenty of murders to wonder at-the odd thing is that vampires aren't always the murderers, they've actually integrated with society, to a point. The show has garnered a few awards, including a coveted Golden Globe.

Check your satellite TV listings for show times. And remember this is for adults only.

Natural Ways to Lower Your High Blood Pressure

Monday, May 2, 2011

True Blood

If you have high blood pressure you have probably been told by your doctor that you will have to take medicines to control it. That is not completely true, you can try alternatives to lower high pressure naturally. In this article we will take a look at some of the natural ways you can lower your blood pressure. One thing to remember is to make sure and carefully monitor your pressure readings if you do suffer from high pressure because this condition can be fatal, it can lead to strokes, heart failure, kidney problems and other blood related problems in the body.

One of the best ways to lower pressure if you are overweight is to lose a few pounds. You can have high blood pressure and be thin but if you are overweight and have high pressure you will have a better chance of lowering it if you exercise and start to eat a healthy diet.

Another way to lower high blood pressure is to eat certain foods that have been proven to be beneficial in lowering pressure. One such food is celery it is a natural diuretic, this means it will help flush out excess fluids and salts in your body. It is natural so has no bad side effects like some of the prescription diuretics that are available.

Another common food that helps lower pressure is garlic. It helps lower the risk of atherosclerosis, the hardening or furring within arteries, caused by excess plaques in the arteries. The garlic works by keeping the blood at the correct thickness and helping the blood circulatory system stay healthy.

The hawthorn plant has also been found to help lower high blood pressure. It is usually taken in capsule form and works by helping strengthen the heart muscle.

Other ways you can lower pressure are by changing your diet to low salt foods, cut out ready meals, junk food and fast foods. Prepare your own meals and start to eat more healthy foods, fruits, vegetables and lean meats.

Drinking more water is also good for lowering high blood pressure. Some people who have tried water fasts for 7 days have seen blood pressure drop as much as 60 points. Although this is not something to do lightly as 7 days with only water is not easy and may not be healthy, if you are considering this you should consult your doctor.

There are also natural mineral supplements you can take to lower high blood pressure. Magnesium or potassium are just a couple of examples both can help support the heart and nervous system. You would probably have to take them as supplement pills to get a high enough daily intake for these minerals to do any good.

As you can see there are quite a few natural things you can do to lower your blood pressure and with a bit of help and support from your doctor you should not have to be dependent on medications for the rest of your life. Discuss with your doctor other alternatives to medications and get him to help you research the alternatives to daily medication.
