Signs of High Blood Sugar

Monday, November 29, 2010

True Blood

If level of sugar in your blood goes beyond what is considered normal, then you might end up with some unwelcome health problems. The same is also true if blood sugar levels decrease. Therefore, it is imperative that you maintain a normal level of blood sugar for proper functioning of your body.

You get sugar from the food you need. This sugar is converted to energy and utilized by the cells of the body. For the sugar to enter the cells, a hormone called insulin is required. This is secreted by the pancreas. When this hormone is not produced, then the sugar cannot enter the cells. As a result, the sugar remains in the blood stream. This is the reason why people suffer from high sugar level.

There are many reasons for high blood sugar. Stress, lack of exercise, certain diseases and infections, taking certain medications, not getting adequate sleep, eating food high in carbohydrates and irregular eating habits contribute to high sugar in blood.

If you have high sugar level, your body will give you signs. This is well before the doctor diagnoses you with diabetes. If you read these signs, you can take corrective measures immediately before it becomes full blown diabetes. Some of the signs of high blood sugar are as follows:

• Feeling drowsy constantly
• Suffering from fatigue even when you have not done any hard work
• Losing weight without a reason
• Notice sudden increase in your appetite
• Wounds taking long to heal
• Feeling thirty constantly
• Having dryness and itchiness of the skin
• Blurry vision

If your blood sugar stays high for many hours, then it could lead to dehydration, which can be fatal if not treated immediately.

If you notice any of the above mentioned symptoms, you should visit your doctor and get a blood test done. Based on the results of your blood test, the doctor will advice you on the further course of action. Do not start any self-medication. It is dangerous.

The Ties of Blood Manifest

Tuesday, November 23, 2010

True Blood

The same is true when we extend the family through time. We all have witnessed the phenomenon of "roots" in recent years. The ties of blood manifest themselves despite the years and despite the quarrels. The extended family is my family. People want to know where they are from and what their lineage is because these are important in knowing who they are. So there is search for the family tree, for the coat of arms, for the missing relatives.

We are more than individuals. We are parts of a much larger whole. To philosophize exclusively from the standpoint of one's individuality and self-interest is to miss this other truth: we are like knots in a vast net, and the reality of the resulting network of individuals expresses more of the truth than the mere sum of individuals. My responsibility, therefore, must go beyond the little knot I call myself. It extends to other people horizontally and vertically, especially and temporally.

The statement that I am my brother's keeper is part of the very fabric of human existence. I am part of species, and I share in the common responsibility for that species. What I do today lives on after me in my children, and in the children of those to whom I am related in the bond of humanness. My ultimate ideal, then, cannot be to self-interest or personal happiness, which will cease at my death, but to my perpetuation in the persons and things that carry on my reality as part of them. Even without reincarnation, my reality extends beyond my lifetime, for my life and my responsibilities are the threads out of which the future is woven.

What we bequeath to the future, therefore, is ourselves, and our responsibility to future generations is identical with our responsibility to ourselves. On this ultimate act rests the meaning of our lives here and now. We are more than individuals. We are part of the future. Nothing else means so much.

Does Green Tea Lower Blood Sugar? The Truth Vs the Myth

Thursday, November 18, 2010

True Blood

It's among the many claims there are about the benefits of tea to your health. However, is it true?

Green tea has been used traditionally control blood sugar in the body. In fact, animal studies show that this powerful drink may even help prevent type 1 diabetes and slow its progression once you have it. It is also known to regulate glucose in the body.

So all signs point to a reduction in sugars. In experiments done to mice in Japan, the catechins and polysaccharides in this wonderful drink are proven to indeed provide significant reductions. Scientists believe that the same principle applies to humans.

However, drinking this tea is not the best way to enjoy these benefits. If you want to get the most out of green tea health benefits, you need to take a supplement that contains tea and a plethora of other beneficial herbs, vitamins, and minerals.

Does green tea lower blood sugar? Yes, but alone it can only do so much. You can lower your blood sugar and prevent many other illnesses in one fell swoop if you take a supplement that contains far more than just this.

After all, who wants to fumble around in a cabinet full of supplements when you can get all you need with one pill. Furthermore, when you take a supplement that combines a wide range of ingredients, they enhance each others effectiveness.

For the best results, look for a supplement that contains many ingredients including vitamins, minerals, herbs, enzymes, amino acids, antioxidants, and trace ingredients. Such a varied combination of ingredients will pack a punch when it comes to lowering your blood sugar level and preventing disease in general.

After taking a supplement of this caliber, you will notice an immediate difference in the way you look and feel. Your skin will be clearer, your energy level will increase, and your concentration will improve. The health benefits are so far-reaching that you'll be glad that you picked a supplement with far more than just green tea!

So does green tea lower blood sugar? Yes, it does and the best way to enjoy that and the other numerous health benefits of this is by taking a supplement with this great ingredient. By doing so, you will be able to prevent practically all of the signs of aging and disease with one supplement alone.

Psychic Series: Psychics in Fiction

hbo series

Books, movies and TV serials alike, capture the workings of a psychic mind. Unsurprisingly, some of these are hugely popular. After all, who doesn't appreciate a bit of magic?

HBO series "True Blood" chronicles the life in the sleepy town of Bon Temps which actually isn't as sleepy as it looks. There are secrets amidst the people and the main protagonist Sookie Stackhouse is a telepath. She has the ability to read minds and another character, Sam, has the ability to metamorphose. "True Blood" is a dark drama series directed in a lovely manner and is scheduled for a Season 4 airing sometime soon.

"Psych" is a comedy series that narrates the story of Shawn Spencer and his partner Gus. They pose as psychic detectives and glue themselves to the Santa Barbara Police Department, insisting on providing their invaluable insight. They pose as psychics since they have no required qualifications to be detectives and basically solve cases not with their psychic abilities, but with observation.

"The Demolished Man" by Alfred Bester was a Sci-fi where the plot was set in such a futuristic world where telepathy was common amongst people. He terms these telepaths as "Espers" and they are divided into 3 levels of telepaths- Type 3 who can understand conscious thoughts at the moment they are formed and were often employed as secretaries or administrators; Class 2 Espers could detect pre-conscious level of thoughts, detect concealed patterns, epiphanies and associations, and formed the professional lawyers, managers etc.; Class 1 Espers can detect all of the preceding plus sub-conscious primal urges, and they occupied the authoritative levels of power in the police and government.

"True Blood", "Psych" are both popularly watched television series and "The Demolished Man" is an award-winning work of fiction, showing that things beyond the normal fascinate people when it is on television and on pages. But when it comes to real life, well, that is a different matter altogether

Vampires in Different Texts and Key Differences

True Blood

Vampires first appeared in literature in the 1800's and became more popular with The Vampyre by Polidori. In the late 1800's, Bram Stoker published Dracula, inspired by the real life Vlad the Impaler, who used to get a kick out of killing people by impaling them on stakes. Dracula then became a basis for many vampire novels over the last hundred years, such as Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. Recently Twilight, By Stephenie Meyer, True Blood, By Charlaine Harris, Vampire Diaries, by L. J. Smith and Vampire Academy, by Richelle Mead, has reignited interest in vampire fiction. Here are the key differences between these vampires.

Twilight, By Stephenie Meyer, explores Edward Cullen, a vampire falling in love with Bella, a human, in Washington. The Cullen Family are central to the novel and they follow the vampire laws of The Volturi, who reign in Italy. The difference between the Cullen's and The Volturi is that they feed off animal blood instead of human blood; they do this to fit into society and do not have to face the guilt of killing innocent people for their blood. The Volturi are the typical savage vampires they drink human blood and do anything to keep vampires hidden from the world. To remain a secret they live and work with humans, like most other vampires they do not need to breathe but do for appearances, they have both reflections and shadows and they can go outside in the day time however, their skin becomes like diamonds all glittery when it hits the sun. The vampires are immortal and do possess strength, unnatural speed, strong senses with some having special powers, for example Edward has the ability to read minds with one exception and his sister has the ability to see visions of the future. The vampires are pale with The Volturi having red eyes and the Cullen's having topaz unless they both require blood this is when their eyes turn black and dark circles form underneath them, they also do not have fangs. The way to kill them is by fire or decapitation, which the pieces are later burnt. Twilight also includes werewolves, who are in fact shape shifters. Male vampires can only reproduce by a human female, which creates a dhamphir, this is part human and part vampire, or vampires can be created by being bitten and after a few days the transformation is complete all that is required is a heartbeat that will then eventually stop.

The True Blood TV series or The Southern Vampire Mysteries, by Charlaine Harris, takes place in Southern Louisiana, involves Vampires who made by being bitten and buried until the transformation is complete. These vampires normally feed on human blood however, due to a synthetic blood creation are able to live normal lives without feeding on humans. They have officially revealed themselves to the public. The Sunlight affects them in a number of ways if they are older they have lower tolerances to it and will burn very quickly, newer vampires will just burn but heal. To kill a vampire requires a stake, fire or decapitation. Silver burns them and leaves them immobilised but will not kill them. These vampires require an invitation to enter a human home which if rescinded they must leave immediately. The vampires are pale with retractable fangs; they too leave a shadow and have a reflection. Vampires have compulsion powers, they are immortal and move at unnatural speed, with strong senses and strength, some can fly. They cannot be outside and sleep all day; they are hunted for their blood, which has drug like effects for humans. They too are ruled by laws put in place locally by an area sheriff who then reports to the king or queen of a state. Other Creatures that exist with vampires are Maenads, Shape shifters, Werewolves, Witches Fairies. Dracula only makes a mention so far in the books.

Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead, Based in Montana and Pennsylvania, vampires or Moroi, are born as a result of two pure blood vampire parents, they are protected by dhamphirs born as a result of a half human and a half Moroi. Two dhamphirs cannot reproduce. The vampires exist in the current world, where they too are ruled by a King or Queen, but remain a secret by having their own education institutions and areas that they live. It is here that they live on a nocturnal timetable; even though they can go out in the sun, it irritates them and makes them weak. Moroi need human blood, they are not that strong and need Dhamphir, who do not need blood and have human physiques, to protect them. They face the evil vampires who are Strigoi, with red eyes, they need blood and cannot go in the sun, to become a Strigoi, Moroi or dhamphir need to be bitten by a Strigoi or Moroi kill another Moroi. The characteristics of the vampires are that they are pale, have retractable fangs, they have reflections and shadows. They have the ability to use compulsion, though it is not allowed, Moroi specialise in an extra power with spirit users able to heal. Unlike other vampires, they are mortal and will grow old and die, unless killed by a silver stake, and they do possess special senses and strength.

Vampire Diaries, by L. J. Smith, explores vampires that are reproduced by transfusion if they are killed while there is vampire blood still in their system. They are immortal, have unnatural speed, senses, strength and can heal, some can fly, shape shift and have mind powers. They have ordinary skin colour, retractable fangs and cast a shadow and have a reflection. Some choose to not drink human blood but animal blood. To kill them requires a stake, fire; sunlight is fatal unless they have a special ring to protect them. They like the True Blood Vampires require an invitation to enter; they also exist in a world with werewolves and witches.

Vampire Chronicles, by Anne Rice, involves vampires that are pale, have fangs, reflections and shadows. They are immortal, with unnatural speed, senses and strength and can heal, only the gifted can fly and only the gifted had mind powers and other powers. They reproduce by transfusion or being bitten or drinking vampire blood. They are hidden though some tried to change that. Cannot be staked, Sunlight is fatal unless they are older vampires who have higher tolerances, fatal to decapitation and fire. Prefer human blood but can drink animal. Similarly, to Twilight vampires as they age they become more statuesque, very smooth and white skin.

Dracula, by Bram Stoker, hailed as the original vampire that all other vampires are based on. Dracula was pale, had fangs, though he had no reflection and no shadow. Stake was fatal, and was affected by garlic, holy symbols, running water and could die by decapitation, drowning or fire. He required an invitation to enter and was immortal with unnatural speed, senses, strength, and could heal. He also can fly and can shape shift to wolf bat dust or fog, he also had powers of telepathy. He was only weakened by the sun but still able to go outside and could only reproduce by transfusion. Existed in a world with werewolves but remained in closed off society.

Comparing different texts, we can see that the vampires are similar, they are often pale, strong, fast, with acute senses, and they die by fire, stakes, or decapitation. They are often reproduced by being bitten or a transfusion occurring and the sun affects them. They exist hidden in society but often share the world with other creatures. Which book or TV series is best, it comes down to personal opinion. Often young adults prefer Twilight, Vampire Academy, and Vampire Diaries. Adult may prefer True Blood, Dracula and the Anne Rice series. People enjoy reading about vampires and there will always be vampire novels to keep their interests.

'Dead is a State of Mind' Continues the Story of Daisy Giordano, Teen Psychic

True Blood

Sixteen-year-old Daisy Giordano has a lot on her plate. Prom season is upon her, but her best-friend-recently-turned-boyfriend Ryan Mendez hasn't asked her to go yet. Worse, he's been hanging around with the incredibly beautiful new girl in school an awful lot. It's bad enough Daisy's dad disappeared, her psychic powers aren't as well-developed as those of her mother and sisters, there's a ghost haunting the town's funeral parlor, and the new guy at school (a Gypsy fortune teller) seems to be following Daisy wherever she goes. Things can only get worse when Mr. Davis, a popular teacher at Nightshade High, is found murdered in the park.

Daisy was introduced to the world in Dead is the New Black, in which she first discovered she had some psychic powers. When she's not solving mysteries or learning to move objects with her mind, Daisy's other interests include coffee (or any caffeinated beverage, really) and chocolate. Like many Italian girls, she loves to cook, and even if her mind-reading and telekinetic abilities aren't fully developed, her cooking skills definitely are!

This series could easily be taking place in the same world as Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood series, with the average citizens of Nightshade only vaguely aware of their supernatural neighbors, including werewolves and other shape-shifters. Like Sookie, Daisy is a bright heroine who struggles to adjust to being able to read minds around her. Fans of L. J. Smith's 'Vampire Diaries' series will probably enjoy Marlene Perez's 'Dead' series as well.

MicroLife Blood Pressure Monitor Review

Friday, November 12, 2010

True Blood

You know what they say about underdogs, they most often come out victorious. The same is true with the MicroLife blood pressure monitor. On the list of the world's best home monitoring devices, MicroLife hardly makes it to the top at all. And yet, it is still always there, ever-lingering, ever-improving, to match up to the features offered by the giants such as Omron and LifeSource.

A Hidden Gem?

Although MicroLife is not as popular as other big-name brands, it has been proven to produce results just as accurately as other devices out there. In fact, many of its Automatic Upper Arm models have received above average grades from the British Hypertension Society and pass the standards of the European Society of Hypertension. The German Hypertension Society also grants its recognition to several MicroLife models, including the Wrist devices-aside from the Upper Arm monitors, of course.

What Measuring Method Does MicroLife Use?

Most MicroLife hypertension monitoring home devices use the oscillometric method of measuring the rate of blood pressure. This means the monitor works by detecting the amplitude of oscillations caused by the blood as air pressure in the cuff is slowly released. This method is used in the Automatic, Semi-Automatic, and Wrist devices offered by MicroLife. There are also aneroid devices, composed of your good, ol' sphygmomanometer and a sturdy stethoscope. Aneroid devices work with the user detecting the Korotkoff sound, or the swooshing or pounding sound the blood makes when the pressure is released and it is allowed to flow out again.

Is It Recommended?

Generally, the MicroLife blood pressure monitor itself is considered an excellent device both by international standards organizations and consumers. However, there have been complaints regarding the software that accompanies each MicroLife device. The software was designed to record the user's blood pressure information to better help monitor heart health, but many users say the application is full of bugs and does not work in several Windows systems.

The Top 10 Best Vampire Book Series

True Blood

Not too long ago Anne Rice was the queen of vampire fiction with her creation of the legendary Lestat. However, in the past few years Stephenie Meyer with her Twilight Saga, Charlaine Harris with True Blood, and other authors with their vampire creations have stormed the best seller charts. But what are the most popular series with the legions of online vamp lit fans?

The top ten most popular (based on online chatter) vampire book series are:

10. Riley Jensen Guardian by Keri Arthur

9. Anita Blake Vampire Hunter by Laurell K. Hamilton

8. The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice

7. The Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine

6. Vampire Kisses by Ellen Schreiber

5. The Darren Shan Saga by Darren Shan

4. Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

3. The House of Night by P. C. Cast and Kristin Cast

2. The Southern Vampire Mysteries / Sookie Stackhouse Novels / True Blood Series by Charlaine Harris

...and the most popular Vampire Lit Series is no surprise...

1. The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer

Not quite making the top ten were Night Huntress by Jeaniene Frost, Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith, Undead and ... by MaryJanice Davidson, Blue Bloods by Melissa de la Cruz, Vampire Beach by Alex Duval, Night World by L.J. Smith, Nikki and Michael by Keri Arthur, Mackenzie Vampires by Nina Bangs, and Almost Human by Melanie Nowak.

The top two series on this list have also been adapted for the screen, with the wildly popular Twilight Saga movies and True Blood television series on HBO. This can have only helped their dominance in this poll. While great literature does not need to be adapted for the screen, it will clearly raise awareness of a series and bring in a whole new group of fans. A Darren Shan motion picture (Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant) will be released in late 2009. Both House of Night and Vampire Academy films or TV adaptations are almost inevitable, although neither seem to be even close to production. If the new CW Network TV series based on L. J. Smith's Vampire Diaries is a hit, then those novels are bound to be in the top ten for my next vamp lit poll. And, finally, it is lovely to see that modern vampire literature icon and pioneer Anne Rice made the list, even if she was not in the top five. Oddly, only two of Anne Rice's novels (Interview with the Vampire and The Queen of the Damned) were ever turned into feature films.

I compiled this list by searching for each of the vampire book series on a number of search engines and ranking them by the number of web pages, discussion forums, photos, videos, etc that are available online.

So What Is So Great About Boardwalk Empire Anyway?

hbo series

Maybe you have heard a good deal of "hoopla" recently about HBO's very ambitious period drama Boardwalk Empire and were left wondering if it was really that "good." While the program may not fit with everyone's tastes, there is no doubt that HBO has really stepped up and produced some memorable and quality television with Boardwalk Empire. Watch the show on satellite TV in high-definition and it will look very striking.

The show is set during the beginning of Prohibition and dives into all sorts of corruption and criminal activity surrounding this interesting period of American history. The series works for a variety of reasons.

Sharp Scripts

The writing is very crisp and lively. Many television programs suffer from dips in quality or simply become boring, as plots just don't gel. However, this doesn't happen with Boardwalk Empire. The pacing is excellent and this is due in a large part to the fact that the writing is top-notch and scripts have been treated with care. While there is no denying that it is violent, it will likely appeal to those who are hoping to find television dramas with more depth and complexity.

Attention to Detail

The look and feel is very time appropriate and does effectively transport viewers in a way that few television programs have ever attempted. The grandeur of the series alone is enough to make it worth trying. Great sets and detailed accurate costumes should be enough to impress most viewers.

Quality Acting

All the actors in the series, regardless of the size of their respective parts, take their roles seriously and it shows in the final product. If you are sick of television programs with weak acting, then you will find Boardwalk Empire to be very refreshing and entertaining.

Ultimately, it is the kind of quality show that people who are busy will want to make time for each week. If you are only going to watch a couple of hours of television a week, you may very well want to give Boardwalk Empire a try. Yes, it actually is that good.

So, I just bought the first three books of the series that inspired "True Blood" and I couldn't resist but search a few clips on youtube of it which lead to the opening of TB. And the opening song is WOW! So I thought "Why not make a video for it?". So here it is. ENJOY! NO COPYRIGHT INFRIGEMENT INTENDED. ALL RIGHTS GO TO THE RESPECTIVE OWNERS. HBO Vs Showtime

hbo series

The two contenders fighting for "Top Premium Movie Channel" currently are HBO and Showtime. These premium cable networks not only offer great movies, but are now becoming known for "hit TV shows". Lets breakdown these two "Heavy Hitters" and see which one gives you more bang for your buck.

HBO Movies-

HBO has 9 movie channels, 2 of which channels are in High Definition (HD). Their movies combine a good mixture of new releases and older movies. They have a good variety of movies and change their featured movies monthly. HBO has better new releases and looks to have a bigger share in the new release market.

Showtime Movies-

Showtime has 7 movie channels (including The Movie Channel), and provide a Showtime Channel and The Movie Channel on HD. Showtime has a decent variety of movies, but The Movie Channel lacks in their movies. Showtime offers new releases but many are inferior to the new releases that HBO is providing.

HBO TV Series-

HBO has a lot of TV Shows that are now featured such as "Entourage", "Eastbound & Down", "Curb Your Enthusiasm", "Hard Knocks", "Hung", "Bill Maher", and "True Blood". HBO for a long time has been successful in TV series with shows such as "Sex in the City" and "The Sopranos" but these recent TV Shows have added to the depth of HBO and make them a top contender for best premium channel.

Showtime TV Series-

Showtime is currently featuring 6 TV series which include "Weeds", "Dexter", "Penn & Teller", "Nurse Jackie", "Inside the NFL", and "The Tudors". Showtime has two hit TV Series which are "Weeds" and "Dexter" but the other series leave the consumer wanting more series to the caliber of the two major hitters. If Showtime were able to create more hit TV series they could take the reign from HBO who has been the leader since "Sopranos" and "Sex in the City".

Judges Decision

This was a tough decision but we have to give the Fight to HBO. HBO provides more of a variety, which makes it more appealing to the customer. Showtime has done a great job in the last couple of years with the release of "Weeds" and "Dexter" but need a couple more TV series to compete with the reigning champ HBO. Only time will tell, but Showtime is making progress and I think it's only a matter of time until they conquer the almighty HBO.

Reduce Blood Pressure Naturally And Fast - Great Tips For You

Monday, November 8, 2010

True Blood

Did you know that most people can reduce blood pressure naturally? That's absolutely true! Many of the people who currently take daily medications to control their hypertension don't really need to be doing so.

I am not advocating going cold turkey. If you are currently taking medication on the instructions of your doctor you can't just stop taking them. But what you can do is to introduce steps to reduce blood pressure naturally to the point where you doctor will be able to give you the good news that you don't need to refill your prescription anymore.

And you can get to that point relatively quickly in most cases! Here are some tips to help you!

Get Snoring Help: If you snore loudly, you may suffer from sleep apnea. Sufferers from this condition have high levels of aldosterone which is a hormone known to cause hypertension.

Anybody For Tea? Did you know that some studies have shown that three cups of tea per day, like hibiscus tea, reduce blood pressure naturally to the same extent as some of the medications?

Walk It Off: Walking is a great way to help your heart to get more oxygen and to strengthen it so that it doesn't find it so difficult to circulate the blood. A good brisk walk every day will do wonders for your hypertension. Why not get a dog so you've got a great excuse to take that walk. Studies have also shown that pet ownership can be good for your pressure!

Dark Chocolate Delight: One of the ingredients is flavanol which help to make veins and arteries more flexible and thus help with circulation. Who says you can't indulge and reduce blood pressure naturally at the same time!

Deep Breaths: Stress hormones release an enzyme in the kidney which heightens pressure. Deep breathing exercises or meditation have been conclusively shown to significantly lower stress hormones.

Working Too Much? A University of California study showed that for some people a work week in excess of 40 hours raised pressure by more than 15% so watch those hours. Most important though is that your life shouldn't be all about work!

Mellow Music: Perhaps strange but true - 30 minutes of mellow music a day (I'm partial to Celtic music myself) can knock almost five points off your blood pressure scores!

Potassium Party: Fruits and vegetables high in potassium are an excellent strategy to reduce blood pressure naturally. You should aim for an intake (from natural sources) of up to 4,000mg per day.

Definitely Decaf: This is a hotly debated area. Many people say that caffeine does not directly impact blood pressure. However, it emphasizes the effects of stress, so switch to decaf if you are prone to stress.

So Long Sodium: For many people, sodium intake directly elevates blood pressure. But remember that the salt you pour on your food accounts for less than 20% of your salt intake. Read the labels and switch from processed foods.

High Blood Sugar

True Blood

It is true that many people around us suffer from high blood sugar problem. This high sugar is not an illness that only affects diabetics. The following article has been designed to explore different aspects of increased glucose levels like

What should be the ideal glucose level after eating?
What are the causes of high level of sugar in blood?
What are the symptoms of increase in the level of glucose?
Ways to test the glucose level?
Why is it important to test the level of sugar?
Are there any tips that can control the level of glucose?
The following reading will help you to understand many important things about level of sugar in the diabetic's body.

Fasting Blood Sugar Level: The level of glucose rises soon after eating, but it returns to normal within 1 to 2 hours. Blood sugar level is also termed blood glucose level range. It is the amount of glucose in the blood stream of the person. It also termed serum glucose level.

The level of sugar after around 2 hours is termed level after-meals. Researches have revealed that after meals the level of glucose in the blood of the diabetics could become more than double even if it was normal before eating.

High Blood Sugar: The reading of blood glucose is high in the early morning because of the secretion of different hormone. Generally these hormones are corticosteroids and growth hormones. This is a reaction that is termed Dawn phenomenon. The sugar value of the person may shoot up very high if the body of the person starts to release some sugar to counteract the low-level of blood sugar. This is termed Somogyi effect.

The reading if falls below 45 mg/dl then it is termed a serious abnormality of glucose levels.

Symptoms of High Blood Sugar: The value of blood glucose that is slightly above the safe range makes the person feel tired as well as thirsty. The person feels hungry, sweat and feels anxious and weak. The heart of the person starts to pound in the chest.

If the range of blood glucose stays high for several weeks then the body starts to adjust with this increased level of blood glucose and then does not give any signs. So it is extremely important to control blood glucose.

Blood Glucose Concentration: The normal blood glucose level should be in the range of 70 mg/dl to 150 mg/dl

Blood Glucose Testing: The reading of glucose in blood test measures the capability of the body to process sugar in blood. Some tests are used to diagnose the onset of diabetes or even prediabetes. Low-level of blood sugar is termed hypoglycemia; it makes the person feel sick.

Maintenance and monitoring of level of sugar in blood is important for the diabetics.

Pain of Salvation - Beyond the Pale

Artist : Pain of Salvation Album : Remedy Lane (2002) Song : Beyond the Pale Lyrics : And SEX was always there from when I was only eight years - tempting me leave thirsty Sweat, skin, a PULSE divine to balance this restless MIND - it seemed so wonderfully physical Oh the BLOOD, the lust, the bodies that color the world: all drugs to die for! Won't you share my fire? How can LOVE make that world a minefield of forbidden GROUND? A map of untouchable skin and SILENCED desire? And love was there in vain, PROFOUND and deep but traced with pain - too early for a child of TEN Loving the pure and sane he sought the goddess unstained - watching them turn to flesh again HUNGRY for both the PURITY and SIN Life seemed to him merely like a GALLERY of how to be And he was always much more HUMAN than he wished to be But there is a LOGIC to his world, if they could only see Wishing - Sickened - Ill - Ticking SOMEONE still this hunger (it's in my blood) always growing stronger (ticking) BUDAPEST I'm learning, Budapest you're burning me This is not who I wanted to be, this is not what I wanted to see She's so young so why don't I feel free now that she is here under me? This was definately a series emphasizing rock and roll with cutting edge photography. The primary character was too angst stricken for my taste and the time loop was a bit much but at least the series lasted long enough to demonstrate different outcomes. Interesting is a bit unsatisfying.

Entertaining in Parts - F. Johnson - East of Eden
Mediocre at best, Witchblade entertains in parts and is tedious in other parts. This is no Buffy, Angel, or -insert favorite fantasy adventure series here-. Some great ideas and characters are mixed with bad writing and boring episodes. One thing I did like was the twist for the second season (really original). If I like a show I can't stop watching it. That wasn't the case with Witchblade. I had to compel myself to finish the series when I had a few episodes left.

AWESOME SHOW - J. Dunn -
Only was cancelled because the lead actress went to rehab because of her drinking problem.

True Blood - The Story So Far

True Blood

What Is It?:
For those of you that aren't familiar, True Blood is an HBO show based on a series of books called The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris. The book and the series follows an alternate reality where not only are vampires real, but following the invention of synthetic blood, vampires have come out of the closet, some wanting to live a more normal life. The series takes place in the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps and follows the main character, Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress who finds herself drawn to the town's new vampire resident, as he is the one person in the town whose mind she can't read.

The Good:
The Southern town of Bon Temps provides a fun backdrop for this story. Take out the vampires, and you still have a whole town full of colourful characters, shape shifters, exorcisms and other weird goings on. I'm also excited about the premise of the story with the idea of vampires fighting for equal rights and some even mainstreaming.

The Bad:
Despite a fascinating premise and a cool backdrop for the story, season one still relied on too many familiar motifs. The Sookie-Bill-Sam love triangle rang a little too close to the Edward-Bella-Jacob scenario in Twilight. Sookie occasionally comes off as a little frivolous as she bounces between Sam and Bill's attention, and to be honest, during the first season, I never really saw any reason why we should care about Sookie and Bill's relationship aside from the fact that according to the script, "they're supposed to be together."

The vamps on the show were a little uninteresting through the first half of the season. They either wanted to reform and were thus completely dull, like Bill, or they were stuck in some seventies or goth version of being a vampire. The plotting in the final couple of episodes went a little too typical Hollywood for a show that is clearly not typical, particularly with the chase scene between Sookie and the real murderer.

The Sex:
Hmm, anybody who watches this show knows that the sex scenes can be surprisingly off the chart even for HBO. Most of course seem to occur between resident sex maniac Jason Stackhouse, and, well, women who mostly end up dead later. While I'm all for amping up the sex scenes, this is a Southern tale with vampires after all, sometimes it's a little distracting.

Characters We Love:
The town of Bon Temps is filled with kooky characters worth checking out. Jason Stackhouse is a character I was on the fence about but lets face it, he's so stupid he makes the show entertaining; His brief girlfriend Amy was also another entertaining character as she swings wildly from being flower child to psychotic junkie; despite only being in the show for a few episodes, you gotta love how the first thing Sookie's Gran wanted to know from Bill was about the civil war; Sam Merlotte obviously has his secrets even now with his biggest one being known by Sookie- it'll be interesting to see what else there is; other Bon Temps residents I'm loving are Arlene, detective Andy , Sookie's best friend Tara whose mouth and parental issues get her into more trouble than anything and Lafeyette, Tara's gay cousin who is decidedly too large a character for the small town of Bon Temps. Vampires I'm loving are Eric, owner of Fangtasia, his assistant Pam, and the newly made vampire Jessica, Bill's "daughter."

Characters We Hate:
There's few characters I despise in this show, but it's probably a bad thing when your leading characters are on that list. Bill needs to get a personality. The one and only thought he seems to have is protecting Sookie. He's just not that interesting. Sookie meanwhile occasionally shows spunk but still feels to much like a damsel-in-distress/love interest and less like a character in her own right. Even her first sex scene with Bill felt right out of a ridiculous Barbara Cartland novel.

Season Two:
Despite not being overly impressed with the first season, season two does have some new interesting things to ponder. First, who or what is Maryann? Second, who or what is this new evil that likes to rip out people's hearts? I'm also liking an apparent end to the love triangle, with Sam essentially wanting out. Here's hoping it stays that way.

The appearance of Jessica, now living with Bill, has also turned on a more comedic side to Bill. Who knew he recycles?! She should also be an interesting foil to Sookie who's relationship with Bill at least seems to have matured a little as they seem more able to withstand hurdles like oh, say, your boyfriend killing off your pervy uncle.

Verdict:
The show seems to be still finding its feet. The characters are becoming more solid and less like an amalgamation of every other vampire-erotica/horror story you've ever read. I still can't help wishing that a certain Billy Idol inspired vampire might roll into town and shake things up, but the story seems to be coming together and that's a start.

Check Out Fringe: The Complete Second Season for $31.95

Fringe: The Complete Second Season Review B002JVWRD6

The first season of Fringe split itself down the middle in terms of quality. Between the first and second half of the season is a divide in quality as stark as the difference between night and day. The show stumbled countless times in its first half season to find a voice that wasn't childish and a pale imitation of many better series that came before. Midway through it found its stride and suddenly Fringe wasn't a joke of a television series but a potential up-and-comer with promise for its second season. There was hope that it would hit its stride, but it never managed to evade the feeling that it was just X-Files 2.0 for a new generation. Sadly, it takes yet another half season (the first half of the second season) before it finally shakes that impression, but by the time the second season comes to a close, there's no doubt that Fringe has become its own source of sci-fi mythology, and it's infinitely more watchable for it.

The comparisons to the X-Files remain during the first half of the season due in large part to what can only be the writers feeling some form of compulsion to pay respect to the series that preceded it. In its opening scene, it even features a clip from X-Files playing on a television as a shapeshifting soldier steals someone else's form. It'd be nice to say that was the point where the show put its X-Files formula behind it, but sadly that doesn't happen until about 10 episodes later. In fact, if you followed X-Files closely, you might notice an odd similarity between the two shows' secret invasion plots; where they part ways however is the sci-fi concept grounding each. While the X-Files went towards a conspiracy to cover up colonization efforts of an alien race and the clandestine human groups attempting to help or foil them, Fringe delves into an almost philosophical take of parallel dimensions, matter shifting, and discussions about the crossing of matter over temporal planes. Yeah, the difference is noticeable, unfortunately it takes half a season to decide that this is what it wants to be.

In between the mythology episodes, we're treated to a few startlingly familiar X-Files premises including a crop of genetically engineered children, a person with the ability to exert their own will over others, a Groundhog Day-esque scenario, and a few others. Now, we can't give X-Files credit for being the genesis of all science fiction stories, and consequently those who've been into paranormal shows since the early days of film and television will notice a few Twilight Zone plots added to the mix as well.

Through all of this, the two character-driven plotpoints lending emotional weight to the situation of two universes at war include the painfully obvious romance brewing between Agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) and Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson), who hangs around to take care of his absent-mindedly brilliant father, Dr. Walter Bishop (John Noble), and offer knowledge that no one else on the team would have (nor that he should have) but is necessary to solve a case. The relationship between those two is obvious and never all that clever. However, once you add in Walter - the entire dynamic of the show has some pull. It turns out that Walter, while an amusing sideshow for the monster-of-the-week episodes of the first season, is the lynch pin upon which everything in Fringe hangs. We learn through a series of clues that Walter was the man responsible for the collision course of these two universes and that his peculiar treatment of both Peter and Olivia stems from deep-seated guilt over what he did to both of them as children. The Walter Bishop storyline makes Fringe worth watching, and luckily the entirety of the second half of the season is devoted to him - unfortunately, watching the season's episodes back to back without weekly breaks might make some of the plot twists really obvious (almost groan-worthy).

While we're talking about groans, let's discuss the shapeshifting soldiers and the observers. Two classes of characters who have an odd resemblance to the assassin drones and the spook informants of X-Files. The observers could be potentially interesting down the road, and their involvement in Walter's life adds a dimension to their roles, but the shapeshifters never materialize into more than just a convenient tool for large plans to fall together really quickly with minimal storytelling effort.

Fringe improved drastically in its second season. Performances are better and the writers have finally escaped the gravitational pull of X-Files. With where the show ends, there's definite potential for a great third season (assuming they don't undo the cliffhanger in the first two episodes of the next season).

Blu-ray Bonus Features

The extras in the set are quite entertaining once you get past the filler pieces like a gag reel, unaired scenes, and a meager 4-episode audio commentary selection. First and foremost they've created a feature covering the show's budding mythology (the role of Leonard Nimoy's character, the concept of multiple universes, shapeshifters, etc.). A few episodes have "Analyzing the Scene" featurettes devoted to opening the audience's eyes to key references thrown into key scenes from a few episodes. An extra episode about a nuclear submarine is also included (it's pretty solid in terms of quality - not sure why it was dropped from the season), and finally, the most amusing and interesting extra, sees John Noble and the show's prop master Rob Smith exploring the set of the team's lab. If you're not a John Noble fan after his great performance in this season, you weren't paying attention.

Fringe: The Complete Second Season Overview

From J.J. Abrams (Lost), Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci – the team behind Star Trek and Alias – and executive producers Jeff Pinkner, J.H. Wyman and Bryan Burk, Fringe returns for a second thrilling season and continues to explore the unexplained phenomena and terrifying occurrences linked throughout the world – known simply as "The Pattern“ – in pursuit of a larger, more shocking truth. Set in Boston, the FBI's Fringe Division formed when Special Agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) enlisted the help of institutionalized "fringe" scientist Walter Bishop (John Noble) and his son, Peter (Joshua Jackson), to save her partner and lover from a mind-bending death. Through unconventional and unorthodox methods, the Fringe team imagines and tests the impossibilities while investigating unbelievable events, macabre crimes and mystifying cases involving teleportation, reanimation, genetic mutation, precognition, artificial intelligence and other fantastical theories. When the unimaginable happens, it's their job to stop it.

Fringe: The Complete Second Season Specifications

"Lost meets The X-Files" is a not inappropriate description of Fox TV's Fringe, especially considering that cocreator J.J. Abrams was also one of the Lost masterminds. But this ambitious and often exciting series (with all 22 episodes from its second season, plus plenty of bonus material, released here on six discs) merits more than that glib label. As before, the members of the Fringe Division, an obscure wing of the FBI barely recognized (and this season threatened with elimination) by the government at large, are the "cleanup crew" summoned when the universe is on the verge of shredding at the seams. Led by Agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv), brilliant but mad scientist Walter Bishop (with John Noble as the show's most appealing character), and Bishop's son Peter (Joshua Jackson), they investigate crimes and occurrences involving the seemingly inexplicable, ranging from garden-variety phenomena like ESP, mind control, and hypnosis to really strange stuff like "clairaudience" (receiving messages or thoughts from another realm), cryonics (as in frozen, disembodied heads), and the existence of a parallel universe. Once again there's also a healthy dose of scary monsters, including a hideous mutant who drags its victims underground before devouring them, a community of deformed victims of scientific tests gone awry, two-foot-long parasites with human hosts, and a walking shadow that renders whoever it passes through into dust and ash. But it all gets more personal for our three heroes this time around, as they realize that Walter's long-ago research and experiments had serious consequences not only for him (he spent 17 years locked up in a rubber room) but especially for Olivia and Peter, who must deal with shocking revelations about their childhoods.

If Fringe has a weakness, it's that its reach sometimes exceeds its grasp. There are so many ideas here that overarching themes like "the Pattern" (a series of terrifying, synchronous events throughout the world) disappear for episodes at a time; the notion of "the other side," a parallel universe where things are largely similar but different in very peculiar details (JFK lived to be an old man, while the Department of Defense is housed beneath the Statue of Liberty), is introduced in the first episode but then rarely mentioned until the second half of the season, which culminates with the Fringe team traveling to the other side and confronting their alternate selves (fortunately, the final two episodes help tie up various loose ends from this season and set the stage for the next one). But a surfeit of good ideas is a lot better than a shortage of them, and the series is rarely less than interesting even when it loses its focus, and the direction, sets, special effects, and other technical elements are consistently excellent. As was the case the first time out, bonus material is generous and varied. It includes a newly "unearthed episode," audio commentary, deleted scenes, features like "The Mythology of Fringe" and "Analyzing the Scene" (brief explications of key scenes in six episodes), and more. --Sam Graham

Fringe: what's not to like! - A. Peeples - Orlando, FL USA
As a huge fan of J.J. Abrams, I bought Season 1 and was whisked away into the world of Fringe. A trip. Had to rewind several times to get it! I love that about a multi tiered story. Now I have Season 2, and it just keeps getting better. As other reviewers have commented, we get more of a peek into character's personal lives and past.

I find echos of Lost and Alias in Fringe. Strong female lead, intelligent and athletic. Until the end of season, no change of appearance...but then. The cliffhanger is a dilly!

Buy it. It is entertaining on so many levels. The features enhance viewing enjoyment. I am going back to Season 1 to refresh memory of how characters came together. The Walter Bishop character is my favorite: brilliant acting, especially when those alternate world are revealed!!!

My set arrived ahead of schedule and in perfect condition. Thanks Amazon. DVDs are my life. No TV ...by choice. Keep 'em coming.

hbo series

It's sometimes difficult to remember a world before smart television shows had cinematic influences. Whether it's the latest offering from HBO or even a sleeper hit like "Mad Men," everything from set design to film angles that would make more sense in a movie than in a sitcom have crossed over from the silver screen to the flat screens in living rooms across the country. The success of this approach to shooting television can really be traced back to "The Sopranos," the HBO mega-hit that managed to change the face of satellite TV for years to come. Whether it was during the show's original airing on the premium cable channel or its current time in reruns on regular television, the show changed the appearance of television, setting channels like HBO on a course more towards smartly directed, beautifully written programming that would be just as at home at your local arthouse theatre as it is on HDTVs across America.

After "The Sopranos" folded, its fans waited eagerly to see what Terence Winter, screenwriter and producer, would make his next project. Many assumed that it would be with HBO, but initially, it looked as though he was shopping his options. Thankfully, the insanity stopped, and it appears that his next series for HBO won't just blow "The Sopranos" out of the water, but just might revolutionize the way that television is made yet again.

For starters, "Boardwalk Empire" has scored the coup of all coups: the pilot episode is directed by noneother than Academy Award winning director Martin Scorcese. A true expert when it comes to films depicting outlaw organizations and corruption, it makes sense that the man responsible for bringing the public "The Departed," "Goodfellas," "Taxi Driver," and "Casino" would jump at the chance to work with such rich source material. Based on a popular book by Nelson Johnson, the show centers around the world of Atlantic City during the 1920s, when alcohol was illegal and a number of clandestine bootleggers managed to make fortunes for families who would later become legal magnates, all the while also dealing with the corruption of the popular gambling destinations' beginnings.

With such promising material and a world-famous director on-board, it would seem that Winter's latest project was a shoo-in for winning over satellite tv viewers and HBO fanatics alike, but there might have still been critics out where with reservations. After all, sometimes adapting true stories can get a little bit difficult, and it's also tough to strike gold twice. Thankfully, "Boardwalk Empire" is also fortunate enough to have a cast that is just as heavyweight as its writer and director. The always-stunning Steve Buscemi holds the show's pivotal role, and his performance has already been whispered as being deserving of awards in industry insider circles. Perhaps the show's biggest gamble is casting Michael Pitt, a very accomplished but mostly unheard of young actor, who is better known by beglittered glam rock fans for his performance in "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," but who blew directors and cinephiles away with his role in "Funny Games." Scorcese, who grew so fond of Leonardo Dicaprio that he helped to re-start his career in a way no one else could have, might very well find traces of a young Dicaprio in Pitt's acting. Casting him in this show might have been one of the best decisions, as finally there will be material rich enough to prove his acting prowess.

So in case the pickings on satellite tv were starting to look a little slim, fear not. If there's anything HBO has a nose for, it's a blockbuster, and "Boardwalk Empire" is shaping up to be just that.

John Adams (HBO Miniseries) Review B000WGWQG8

I was never interested in American history in school, but today's political scene has given me cause to wish I would have paid more attention. This HBO Miniseries is outstanding. It is captivating and leaves you in awe of the sacrifices made by our founding fathers and their families. It is much more than just a history lesson. It is a beautiful love story of John and Abigal Adams and the trials and tribulations they faced together. It is the story of the deep friendship which developed between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. It is an action packed story of the defeat of the British. It is a story of courage and commitment from which our freedom was born. I watched the whole series in a single weekend because I simply couldn't stop. Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney were remarkable in their roles as John Adams and Abigale Adams. An outstanding job HBO! We need more historical works made interesting!

John Adams (HBO Miniseries) Overview

John Adams is a sprawling HBO miniseries event that depicts the extraordinary life and times of one of Americas least understood, and most underestimated, founding fathers: the second President of the United States, John Adams. Starring Paul Giamatti (Sideways, Cinderella Man, HBOs American Spendor) in the title role and Laura Linney (You Can Count on Me, Kinsey) as Adams devoted wife Abigail, John Adams chronicles the extraordinary life journey of one of the primary shapers of our independence and government, whose legacy has often been eclipsed by more flamboyant contemporaries like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton and Benjamin Franklin. Set against the backdrop of a nations stormy birth, this sweeping miniseries is a moving love story, a gripping narrative, and a fascinating study of human nature. Above all, at a time when the nation is increasingly polarized politically, this story celebrates the shared values of liberty and freedom upon which this country was built.

John Adams (HBO Miniseries) Specifications

Based on David McCullough's bestselling biography, the HBO miniseries John Adams is the furthest thing from a starry-eyed look at America's founding fathers and the brutal path to independence. Adams (Paul Giamatti), second president of the United States, is portrayed as a skilled orator and principled attorney whose preference for justice over anti-English passions earns enemies. But he also gains the esteem of the first national government of the United States, i.e., the Continental Congress, which seeks non-firebrands capable of making a reasoned if powerful case for America's break from England's monarchy. The first thing one notices about John Adams' dramatizations of congress' proceedings, and the fervent pro-independence violence in the streets of Boston and elsewhere, is that America's roots don't look pretty or idealized here. Some horrendous things happen in the name of protest, driving Adams to push the cause of independence in a legitimate effort to get on with a revolutionary war under the command of George Washington. But the process isn't easy: not every one of the 13 colonies-turned-states is ready to incur the wrath of England, and behind-the-scenes negotiations prove as much a part of 18th century congressional sessions as they do today.

Besides this peek into a less-romanticized version of the past, John Adams is also a story of the man himself. Adams' frustration at being forgotten or overlooked at critical junctures of America's early development--sent abroad for years instead of helping to draft the U.S. constitution--is detailed. So is his dismay that the truth of what actually transpired leading to the signing of the Declaration of Independence has been slowly forgotten and replaced by a rosier myth. But above all, John Adams is the story of two key ties: Adams' 54-year marriage to Abigail Adams (Laura Linney), every bit her husband's intellectual equal and anchor, and his difficult, almost symbiotic relationship with Thomas Jefferson (Stephen Dillane) over decades. Giamatti, of course, has to carry much of the drama, and if he doesn't always seem quite believable in the series' first half, he becomes increasingly excellent at the point where an aging Adams becomes bitter over his place in history. Linney is marvelous, as is Dillane, Sarah Polley as daughter Nabby, Danny Huston as cousin Samuel Adams, and above all Tom Wilkinson as a complex but indispensable Ben Franklin. --Tom Keogh

Leave it to HBO..... - Hubbell Gardner - NC
to make the best miniseries about the history of this country and the great men who, even with having their human flaws and differences, fought for everything they did to make this country what it is supposed to be. Sad to say that if they could see the mess it is in today.........they would be amazingly disappointed and mad as hell !!!!

Very Far Left View of Founding Fathers. - Roland F Cyr - Plymouth, CT, US
This HBO series depicts George Washington as an idiot. Ben Franklin as a playboy in Paris. John Adams as an angry, frustrated man, poor husband, poor father. I should have not expected historical facts from HBO and Tom Hanks; even most of the players are far left individuals. Will be used to indoctrinate our young children guaranteed. Would not recommend wasting your time on this.

Some praise, and four gripes - Ronald Kozar - Dayton, Ohio
A fine series - both educational and dramatic. Among many other things that other reviewers have rightly applauded, the producers skillfully captured the subtle changes in dress and culture over the decades covered by this epic.

But, alas, here are my four biggest gripes:

First, most of the dialogue is whispered rather than spoken. I had to turn the volume way up to hear it.

Second, the cameraman has the annoying habit of deliberately shaking the camera, especially in the earlier episodes. He really wants you to know that the camera is hand-held.

Third, the portrayal of Abigail Adams is hokey throughout. She is presented as an all-patient, all-knowing pillar of quiet strength and wisdom for her husband who, unlike her, comes across as a mere, whiney mortal. Laura Linney, the actress who plays Abigail, keeps her brow frozen in an uncomfortable-looking expression of pain and forbearance that must have given her a headache. It didn't take long for me to get tired of looking at her.

Fourth, the scene of the Adamses copulating shortly after Abigail's arrival in France is gratuitous, as is the needless non-erotic shot of their daughter's breast in the final episode. These were added, I suppose, to bring the series into compliance with the Law on Mandatory Sex and Nudity in All Productions.
